Work In Progress by toxkillfraex Work In Progress by toxkillfraex
It's finished it's not a wip I just titled it work in progress, because obviously the maker of that hand isn't finished with it =)

I used a stock hand as a ref: [link]

I'm aware that it's kinda dark and maybe I screwed a little too much with the scanning process. Either way I couldn't let it do auto because my scanner tried to flip it so that hand was pointing upwards... :icondonotwantplz:
I really need to learn how to use my scanner more properly =P

Also you can see it as another part of this lady: [link]
the original sketch of this hand: [link]

This is amazing! I am writing a book right now, and this picture goes so well with the plot! Could I be so bold as to ask if I can use it as a chapter picture? I'm trying to fin a whole bunch of sketched to do this, and yours is just so perfect I couldn't go without asking.

Let me know and we can work out the details.

The license I put on it is pretty much self explanatory.

You have to mention I made it and not for profit.

and if there's profit involved I'd have to think twice about it.

I'm glad to hear somebody thinks it's imaginative. I really cling to my imagination with allot of force and love.
I'm afraid I might lose it like some of my friends

Blood =O xD
but it's not even a finished robot hand so I don't think any liquids of any sort would've been in contact with it yet.
Though you could see the tube in the (bottom) right side arm metal bone thing as a sort of vein for liquids, like... blood =O

took me a while to gather my guts together and ask this.

I've already had a few in depth critiques on this, but could ask your time to give one too?
I'm sure you can add to it =3

thanks before hand

--- there's nothing -- major -- wrong with it, but you owe it to yourself to do a couple material studies on different sorts of metals. the contour lines are heavy in some places and the line weight isn't helping to lend any depth to the piece(there are several good blogs with helpful tips on line weight).

--- otherwise... how long did it take you to draw this? i'm guessing way too long -- just a guess. i recommend doing a whole 16 hours worth of hand studies and the next time you go for something like this you'll blow right through it.

Material studies and line weight are noted! That's new :woohoo:

Just how do I do material studies? Do I find blocks of wood and items with metal in it and draw them while taking into account how they are lit and how I could make the texture (thinking about wood here, even leather) come out as well? We recently inherited a whole set of copper things I could abuse as reference. (I could probably bug my mom for more stuff too)

As for how long it took me... Though I admit I do take long and used to take even longer, you're overestimating it, but I get where you're going with that
I've already found that using references cuts of 2 hours of fiddling and I think I'm so encouraged these day that I lose at least another hour of what it usually takes me. This I'd say between 12 or 9 hours it's still long though So I know what you mean.

The other day I kinda came across a sketchblog (a meager one but still) and the guy had like a page with 100 feet. (this work was done already though) I just don't know where I could find enough references to fill a whole page with hands. :grump:

I'll just stalk all over DA's stock people and make a whole folder full of... hands... and another with feet and a whole lot of other folders with... Well you get the gist.
I'm also having a bit of trouble where to start lately, but it all comes down to one thing 'more photo reffing!'
(I've also been doing those gesture sketches you suggested, it isn't paying of yet, but I know it will! It really helps to loosen my hand and such though)

I have three months of nothing to do though so I think I'll find time to do the whole mess.

if you haven't figured out yet how to use DA's deviation category system to browse for references i suggest you go fiddle with it now; otherwise just consult Google images for your references(life references are best, but make do with what you have).

go to PoseManiacs.com and use their 30-second gesture drawing program to warm up. i do about a page of these a day, front and back. it takes about an hour.

9-12 hours for a pencil sketch is not only painful, but highly unnecessary - force yourself to condense your sketches into the span of only a couple minutes and you'll soon find your brain compensating for the shortened amount of time by eliminating unnecessary details and steps out of your process.

that's the best advice i can give. ;p

Alright I can live with that. It's still very much appreciated, but I will go get those inherited pots and pans =P
and DA references too.

As for time, one person once told me I didn't need to desire to be fast before I was good in a you can't run before you can't walk. I guess I can pretty much walk a bit now, but not enough to run. I'll just have to walk more and more until it gets into running.

Or as what I'm going to do now... Draw more =)

your time and advice is all very much appreciated

that person was a dunce and had no idea what it's like to compete in a world full of professional artists. i highly recommend you spend some time watching these videos: [link]

even if you're only looking into illustration, your time-work ratio will matter. and if it's only a hobby, then there's very little sense in seeking out constructive criticism at all.

again, watch those videos. they'll explain my perspective.
